Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area lies hidden away in the western edge of the Texas Hill Country. It contains over 1800 acres of rugged land and home to the sinister looking Devil’s Sinkhole, its main attraction. It is the largest single-chambered cavern in the State of Texas and third deepest measuring over 350 feet deep. This Nationally Registered Natural Landmark is a collapsed limestone pit 45-65 feet in diameter at its opening and approximately 150 feet at its shallowest point. The sinkhole is home for up to the three million bats that migrate to Texas every summer. Visitors are shuttled to the site and are dared to peer into the depths of Devil’s Sinkhole and view the millions of bats pour out like a tornado at dusk. Access to Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area is limited to tours only. There is currently no camping or day use available.
Reservations are required and can be made by contacting the Devil’s Sinkhole Society, or visiting our visitor’s center located in the town square of Rocksprings, Texas, day tours and special group can also be arranged with prior notice.
Tours: Evening Bat Flight Tours: regularly scheduled interpretive tours available May to mid-October. Wednesday- Sunday, call ahead for reservations.Space is limited. Visitors will be shuttled to the site. Day Tours: afternoon tours are available by contacting the Society. Three days notice is required.
